Giant characeter Dennis’s passing leaves Raystede staff heartbroken

Heroes are often unassuming. They step in and save the day without fuss and glory and make us realise their value and true worth. One of our Hero Horse number, Dennis the Intuitive, was one such hero according to the team at Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare, in East Sussex.

Born in 1998, Irish draught cross Dennis came to the Centre in 2017. He had belonged to the same owner almost his entire life but developed a debilitating condition as he got older which caused him to be plagued with lameness problems.

Janet Parsons, from Raystede sent us this message.

“We’re heartbroken to have to report that our beloved Dennis has crossed the Rainbow Bridge.  Our handsome ginger gentleman was truly one of a kind. Always first at the gate for breakfast, Dennis certainly knew his size and had a cheeky streak when food was involved but with people, he was the gentlest soul.

“He loved cuddles, grooms, and affection, and was adored by our Equine Team. For eight wonderful years, Raystede was his home. He shared many hours playing, grooming, and bonding with his equine companions and truly brought joy to everyone lucky enough to know him.

“Over the years, Dennis battled navicular disease and needed help of remedial farriery to support him. He recently sustained a ligament injury but despite this, our Equine Team were able to rehabilitate him and enjoy another wonderful year with him. Sadly, his struggles became too great, and his comfort and dignity had to come first. Surrounded by his amazing team of carers, who loved him deeply, the hard decision was made to let him go peacefully.

“Dennis has left a giant hole in our hearts and life at Raystede won’t be the same without him.

“Run free, Dennis.” 🧡
