Great day at Ascot races as Crystal Caprice storms home to win War Horse Memorial Stakes 2022

Champion jockey Ryan Moore rode Crystal Caprice to victory in the 2022 War Horse Memorial Stakes watched by friends and War Horse Memorial Ambassadors who were treated to a day at the races courtesy of Ascot Racecourse.

It was part of the September Racing Weekend and the second time Berkshire’s world famous stage has hosted our event, generously sponsored by WHM Ambassador Michael Thompson. Kirk and Hannah Petrakis travelled from Devon to be with us and Jennifer Hawkins came from Worthing to be with other War Horse Memorial supporters.

Ours was Race Five on the card over one mile and worthj £18,900 to the victor. Starting 6/5 favourite with the bookies, Irish-born three-year-old filly Crystal Caprice was in fourth place at two furlongs out before launching a challenge to grab the lead inside the final 150 yards. Powering through she won comfortably by one-and-a-quarter lengths from Don’t Tell Claire. Michael Thompson awarded owner Sir Evelyn De Rothchild’s representative with the winner’s cup. War Horse Memorial co-founders Alan Carr and Susan Osborne presented triumphant jockey Moore with celebratory champagne (top). Moore rode the Queen’s horse, Estimate, to win the Gold Cup at Ascot in 2013, which Her Majesty regarded as her greatest race triumph.

Ascot is proud to support The Horse Comes First, a campaign run by leading organisations in British horse racing to raise awareness of the high standards of equine welfare in the sport. The Horse Comes First aims to improve the understanding of the care given to horses throughout and after their careers in racing.

British Racing is among the world’s best regulated animal activities. The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is the Government recognised body responsible for the regulation of horseracing. Together with the RSPCA and our colleagues at World Horse Welfare, whose President is HRH The Princes Royal, it is a leading signatory of the National Equine Welfare Protocol.
