Donation from us to help feed hungry animals being cared for on the Wirral
Yard manager at Horse Sense Wirral, Jess, with Susan Osborne, co-founder of The War Horse Memorial, and Bilbo Baggins who will be one of the residents benefitting from our £1,500 donation to help provide feed over the winter.
Horse Sense Wirral has been caring for equines since 2009. It now has more than 70 horses, donkeys and ponies in its care as well as a 350 small animals who have been lucky enough to call the picturesque village of Thornton Hough home.
Feeding this army of once neglected or abandoned animals costs the charity £1,600 a month. With the price of feed and medicines at an all-time high, the volunteer team are working hard to meet the challenge. With your support we have been able to help. Susan Osborne, co-founder of The War Horse Memorial, went to deliver the good news –a donation of £1,500 which will go some way to providing hay for the horses over the winter.
Horse Sense Wirral was founded by Amy Pirie following a very public rescue of a pony named Herbie. That led her to receiving many requests for help with other neglected and abandoned horses. In 2013 Horse Sense Wirral received charity status and has rapidly grown, with a dedicated team of volunteers who help with the day to day running of looking after the site and the animals.
Celebrity resident Bilbo Baggins
Susan met with Yard Manager Jess. They are pictured here with Bilbo Baggins, a cob stallion and a local celebrity. He became famous in 2012 for pulling a canal boat on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. He is the first horse to have completed the 128-mile journey and it took him five months. His owner sadly died, but her last wish was for him to see out his days with Amy, Jess and the team.
Jess explained that the aim is to relieve pain and suffering in animals, particularly horses, by providing ample love and care. “This can mean veterinary care when required,” she said. “The idea is to be able to find them a new home when they are fully recovered. However, some have to stay with us for the duration of their lives due to ongoing medical care and management. This can be expensive, but we never turn any animal away."
