Canterbury Cathedral
We recognised national Purple Poppy Day - as we know many of you did too - as a day to remember the service and sacrifice of millions of animals in war. We were invited to Canterbury Cathedral for a special Purple Poppy Service, conducted by the Vice Dean, the Venerable Jo Kelly - Moore, and organised by John Bishop, Chairman of the Canterbury Branch of the Royal Artillery Association and one of our valued Ambassador Volunteers. The Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Councillor Terry Westgate, was joined by dozens of residents and visitors to stand in silence, as John’s comrades lowered their standards and the Last Post was sounded, followed by Reveille. We were invited to lay a simple wreath of knitted purple poppies, and reflect on the role animals have played in helping our armed forces secure the democracy we all enjoy today, and on our own Poppy the War Horse and how she has become a catalyst in helping us support our chosen good causes. It was a wonderful occasion and all against a backdrop of a magnificent giant wooden horse, made as a result of a partnership between Canterbury School of Visual Arts and Canterbury College and Canterbury Cathedral.
